JACKSON HOSPITAL - GOODE BUILDING

The project consisted of replacing (2) existing 300-ton water-cooled screw compressor chillers located in the basement mechanical room of the Goode Building, with (2) new 350-ton magnetic bearing water-cooled chillers. Multiple existing chilled water pumps in the Goode Building mechanical room and South Building mechanical room were removed from service, and piping was reconfigured to accommodate (3) new variable speed pumps. The chillers and pumps were arranged in a variable-primary configuration. The chiller replacement was designed to meet current ICC codes & standards, including energy code requirements. Requirements of ASHRAE 170 “Ventilation of Health Care Facilities” was considered in the design. Mechanical room refrigerant monitoring and emergency exhaust system was included in the design.   

Existing ductwork, piping, and equipment in the mechanical room was removed, reconfigured,  replaced, etc., as required to accommodate the new chiller design and installation. The chillers and pumps were provided with DDC controls and tied into the existing building automated system (BAS). Rental chiller equipment was required to be provided to minimize system downtime when the existing chillers and pumps were removed and the new chillers and pumps were assembled in the mechanical room. The (2) existing cooling towers were orginally sized for 300-tons each, but the 20 hp fan sections were replaced with new 30 hp fans that increased the plant's cooling capacity to better accommoodate the new 350-ton chillers.  

Sherer Consulting Engineers, LLC served as the Prime A/E and Mechanical Engineer-of-Record for the project, working directly for the Owner.  Mills-Conoly Engineering served as the Electrical Engineer, working as a consultant to SCE.  Daikin served as the General Contractor and also provided the chiller equipment.
