In 2023, Gulf Corp Services retained Sherer Consulting Engineers, LLC to provide engineering services to replace (2) 500-ton water-cooled modular chiller plants serving the 29-story condominium building, located directly on the Gulf of Mexico. The previous chillers, located on the 26th floor roof, sustained damage during Hurricane Sally in September 2020.
Prior to ordering the new chillers, SCE performed HVAC load calculations to confirm the required cooling capacity for the building. A hydronic analysis was also performed on the existing chilled water piping and pumps serving the building to help determine if any improvements needed to be made. SCE served as the Mechanical Engineer-of-Record for the project and provided engineered permit drawings, which were submitted to the City of Orange Beach for review and approval.
The (2) new 500-ton Daikin water-cooled modular chiller plants were installed in the same locations as the previous chiller plants and tied into the existing chilled water and condenser water piping. The water-cooled centrifugal chillers, utilizing oil-free, magnetic bearing compressors, provide a high level of energy efficiency for the Owner, as well as reduced maintenance requirements. Daikin served as the General Contractor for the project and coordinated the installation and chiller start-up.
