Sherer Consulting Engineers, LLC is serving as the Mechanical Engineer-of-Record for the phased renovation of the Village Student Housing complex, located in the heart of Auburn University’s campus. The complex comprises eight four-story buildings with a total capacity of 1,654 beds. The first floors of the buildings include classroom spaces, sorority chapter rooms, dining areas, and dorm suites. Constructed in 2009, the buildings are served by four-pipe hydronic fan coil units, with each building fed from the campus central energy plant.
Sherer Consulting Engineers was initially hired as the Prime A/E for the mechanical replacement project for all eight buildings. A separate interior upgrades project was scheduled to occur simultaneously with the mechanical replacement project, and the two projects were eventually combined into one, with Williams Blackstock Architects serving as the Prime A/E. The project has been divided into multiple phases of construction, with the current plan to bid one phase per year until all eight buildings are completed by 2028. After Summer 2025, five of the eight building renovations will have been completed. Phase 1 included two buildings and was bid in November 2021, and it came in well under the anticipated budget. The total anticipated cost for all eight buildings is approximately $23,000,000.
SCE has held an open-end IDIQ agreement for mechanical design services with the University since 2021, and an open-end IDIQ agreement for commissioning services since 2023.
