STAFF MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Description:

Staff Engineer will work under the general supervision of Associate and Principal Engineers to manage projects and perform engineering services. The Staff Engineer will perform various tasks, including, but not limited to, the production of construction documents (drawings and specifications); project management throughout project duration; construction administration; management of other employees; and assistance in commissioning services.  Responsibilities will increase with experience.    


General Duties:

  • Work under the supervision of Associate and Principal engineers to perform mechanical engineering design services, manage projects, estimate project budgets, perform construction administration services, interact with clients, etc.
  • Design HVAC and plumbing systems, including equipment selection and sizing, air distribution layout, hydronic system layout, and plumbing sizing and layout.  Generate final drawings and specifications that will be used for construction.    
  • Design fire protection systems (typically performance-based specification where sprinkler contractor provides detailed shop drawing layout, hydraulic calculations, etc.)
  • Perform various calculations, including HVAC load calculations (Trane Trace 3D Plus), ventilation calculations, hydronic piping analysis, plumbing system calculations, energy code compliance calculations, etc. 
  • Incorporate applicable building codes into project designs. 
  • Coordinate with project team members/consultants as required on each project including architectural, civil, structural, and electrical disciplines.       
  • Interact and meet with clients, contractors, architects, consultants, etc. 
  • Supervise and train Mechanical Designers and Entry-level Engineers, as required.
  • Perform LEED-related calculations and complete documentation for submission to USGBC as required on LEED-certified projects.  
  • Perform energy modeling and life cycle cost analyses as required for various projects. 
  • Perform on-site project visits and inspections as needed for verification of existing conditions and construction administration.  Provide other construction administration services as needed, including submittal review, request-for-information (RFI) responses, field inspection reports, construction issues and/or conflict resolution, etc.
  • Assist  Associate and Principal Engineers with Commissioning services, as needed.       
  • Obtain experience, skills, etc., as required to become an Associate Engineer.

 

Qualifications:

Experience & Education:  6-12 years of related experience is desired.  An active P.E. license is required for this position.
 

Knowledge:  General proficiency in Windows-based operating systems and Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc., is required.  Proficiency in Autodesk products, including AutoCAD MEP and Revit is desired.  Experience with HVAC load calculation and energy modeling software is desired (SCE uses Trane Trace 3D Plus). Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.  Basic knowledge and experience with general construction practices, methods, and terminology are required.


Physical Demands:

Work is mostly performed in an office setting, but some outdoor on-site work will be required (construction inspections, building surveys, coordination meetings, etc.). Occasional work near moving mechanical parts and high voltage equipment will be required.  Some equipment will be located on roofs or equipment mezzanines, so the ability to climb a ladder is required.  Local and out-of-town travel will be required, and possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

This position is full-time with a minimum of 40 hours per week during regular working hours (9 hours Monday - Thursday, 4 hours on Friday).  Employee must be able to work as needed on nights and weekends to meet client deadlines.
